Browser Accessibility Guide

"A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths; feels your fears but fortifies your faith; sees your anxieties but frees your spirit; recognizes your disabilities but emphasizes your possibilities" William Arthur Ward (American dedicated scholar, author, editor, pastor and teacher)

This page gives information about how you can change the settings on your browser to meet your needs. It covers:

Manually changing the text size on your browser

The easiest way to change the text size on this site is to use the text sizing buttons which are at the top of each page. The text sizer requires that javascript is enabled on your browser. If you have javascript switched off on your browser or the text sizer doesn't work on your computer, on modern browsers you can manually adjust the text size. Please note, this will affect all sites that you visit (and may affect the appearance and layout of this site if the text sizing buttons aren't used). See the instructions below for further details.

Re-sizing text

The way to change the text size differs between browsers. The list below shows the procedure for some popular browsers. If your browser isn't in the list, the following guidelines may help. In general, looking under the "View" menu, you will find an option called "text zoom", "text magnification", "text size", or "font size".

PC Windows
  • Internet Explorer 3 and 4: View > Fonts
  • Internet Explorer 5+: View > Text Size
  • Firefox: View > Text Size > Increase/Decrease
  • Mozilla: View > Increase Text Size/Decrease Text Size
  • Netscape 6: View > Text Size
  • Netscape 7: View > Text Zoom
  • Opera 5 and 6: Use drop down menu on ‘progress’ bar
  • Opera 7: View > Zoom

Mac operating systems
  • Internet Explorer 4.5: View > Text Size
  • Internet Explorer 5+: View > Text Zoom
  • Netscape 4: View > Increase/Decrease Font Size
  • Netscape 7: View > Text Zoom
  • Opera 5 and 6: Use drop down menu on ‘progress’ bar
  • Safari: View > Text Size.

Navigating the site without a mouse or pointing device

In line with The Usability and Accessibility Working Group guidelines, we don't use access keys on this site as access keys (keyboard shortcuts, usually used by pressing two or more keys to activate a link) can conflict with system keys, keyboard shortcuts, used by various browsers. It is possible to navigate our site though without the use of a mouse, by ‘tabbing’ between links using the ‘TAB’ key on your keyboard. Once a link is tabbed onto, it can be activated by pressing the ‘enter’ key.

You can also use the TAB key to ‘tab’ down the fields in forms.

Printing pages from this site

Websites are designed for screens, not for printing. Sometimes this means some content may be cut off the edge when you try and print it. Most modern browsers have a ‘shrink to fit’ feature for printing web pages. If your browser doesn't have this feature, you can alter your browser's print margins to fit the page onto the paper. This is usually found under ‘File’ > ‘Page set-up’ or something similar. Alternatively set the paper to landscape rather than portrait printing.

As this site is built using web standards, it uses background colours and images that show on screen but don't print. This is intentional and will help to conserve ink if you print any of our pages.

Navigation and ‘breadcrumb trails’

This site makes use of ‘breadcrumb trails’ like the one shown below. All of the pages of our site have these near the top of the page (just under the main menu. The bold page is the page that you are currently on.

You can quickly return to previous pages by clicking on the links that show where you are in relation to other pages on the site. You can also access the breadcrumb links using the TAB key.
